Acta Mathematica Sinica is the very first mathematical journal in China which was founded in 1936. Now it becomes the most influential Chinese journal of its kind of international fame. As the official organ of the Chinese Mathematical Society, it publishes main research papers from all branches of pure and applied mathematics. It has recorded the course of the Chinese mathematicians¡¯ hard work and growth, and played a significant role in promoting the Chinese mathematical development. Now the journal is fully conscious of how to cut an appropriate figure on the platform of international academic exchanges.

The Chinese Mathematical Society was established in July 1935. About one year later, Acta Mathematica Sinica was published. Its first volume consisted of two issues. While issue 1 of its second volume was published in February 1937, issue 2 of the same, however, was published in Feb. 1940. The journal stopped publication in World War II. Papers in the first two volumes were all published in English.

In 1951, the journal resumed publication, renamed ¡°Journal of the Chinese Mathematical Society, New Series¡±, and was published quarterly in English with Chinese abstract.
In 1952, from Vol. 2 (succeeding the first volume of 1951), it was renamed ¡°Acta Mathematica Sinica¡± and published in Chinese with English abstract.

The journal stopped publication again from July 1966 for obvious reasons. From 1951 through 1966, altogether for 16 years, the journal published a total of 67 issues, amounting to 667 papers, greatly promoting the development of mathematics in China, so it became the most authoritative mathematical science journal in China.

In 1973, the journal resumed publication again as a quarterly. From 1979 onward, however, it appeared as a bi-monthly.

In April 1984, for the purpose of prompting international exchanges between the Chinese and the oversea mathematicians, the journal established the English series, named Acta Mathematica Sinica, New Series (ISSN 1000-9574), a quarterly, publishing papers different from those in the Chinese series. In 1999, the journal was renamed Acta Mathematica Sinica, English Series (ISSN 1439-8516), and published by the prestigious science publisher : Springer-Verlag.

Now, the journal publishes every year the Chinese series in 6 issues, and the English series in 4 issues, totaling about 2080 pages. The English series has over 600 subscribers all over the world, and the Chinese series has over 2000 subscribers in China. Now, as a mathematical science journal of China it enjoys the most wide circulation.

The editors in chief of our journal are the most prominent Chinese mathematicians of the time. They are Boqing Su(1936--1940), Lookeng Hua(1951--1966), Sucheng Zhang, Wentsun Wu, Yuan Wang(1982--1988), Lo Yang(1989--1992), Jingren Chen(1993--1995), Kungching Chang et al. The papers published were among the most excellent ones at that time.

Since 1998, the editorial board of the English series has effected a big reform; now it draws as its members not only the distinguished Chinese mathematicians Kunching Chang, Lo Yang, Zhiming Ma, Weiyue Ding et al., but also the distinguished international mathematicians Gang Tian, Fanghua Lin, Weinan E, Jianshu Li, Jun Li, Xiaosong Lin, Zhihong Xia, Shouwu Zhang.

Now, the journal has become an outstanding international mathematical science journal, in which many high quality papers have been published, and has been indexed by well-known international science databases, for example: SCI, SA, Zentralblatt Math., Math. Reviews.

The journal is directly sponsored by the Chinese Mathematical Society, and its editorial board forms one of the important departments of the Institute of Mathematics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. At the same time, the journal is also strongly supported by many related organizations, especially the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Publication Foundation of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Publication Foundation of the China Science and Technology Association.
